Route

We start in Grand Portage Minnesota and head up.. clockwise around the 'Lake'.  For the entire Canadian shore I'll be joining Dave, Amy and Wilderness Classroom intern Dan.  Once we pass the outflow toward Sault Ste Marie I'll be on my own the rest of the way.  The 3 Yellow markers are Grand Portage, Sault Ste Marie and my house in Duluth.  I may or may not take a break as I pass by on the way back up complete the circle tour.

We will skip some of the larger bays which is typical.. Thunder Bay for example (not the city but the bay), we will cross from Pie Island to Thunder Cape at the end of the Sleeping Giant Provincial Park.  We'll also skip Black Bay and Nipigon Bay which is typical of kayaker's paddling around the lake.

We plan to head out to the Slate Islands which I've never seen.  I have paddled just around the islands just over the border and have paddled a few times each the coastline of Silver Islet to Rossport and Pukaskwa National Park, but that's it for Canada's shore.  The rest of the route is fairly obviously just following the shore other than a few larger bays as we approach the outflow of Superior on the way to Sault Ste Marie.  It's common to cross the mouth of Whitefish Bay when kayaking around the 'Lake' but I think I'll spend the extra time and stay with Dave, Amy and Dan and cross at some shorter distance just before the Sault.

I'm really looking forward to the southshore.. I've never paddled at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore or any of Michigan's U.P. and really only a few times at the Apostles Islands National Lakeshore.  I'll be seeing mostly new coastline the entire way really. I think at this point I've kayaked only 8% to 10% of Lake Superior's shore

  1. Hi John,

First time on your new Blog site. Lot's of good pics and site updates. Pukaskwa has fairly nice sandy beaches then it gets a little more rocky on way to Whitefish Bay. The Michigan side has a lot of sandy beaches. Unfortunately, is also more noisy from shoreline roads and Harley's.

Are you going around the Keweenaw Peninsula or channel thu Houghton ? A lot of nice scenery going around.

Glad things are working out a little better for you than last year. I will be out in Colorado in June riding and then probably doing a Apostle trip either July or Aug.

Say hi to Dave & Amy

If you need some input on Superior trip let me know.

    Have a great trip.

  2. Hi Duane .. Klinge?
Not sure if I'll go through or around Keweenaw Penisula at this point. I've been to Pukaskwa a few times though not since 1997. Seeing lots of shore I've not paddled before though. First time I'd been out to the Slates too!
